We have seen it all when it comes to personal injury claims. Of course, there are the typical car accidents and unavoidable workplace accidents, but there are a lot of avoidable injuries that happen. You may be surprised to know football tailgating is a common source of accidents. If you think about it, it makes sense. You are combining hot grills, alcohol, and a lot of social activity. This can be a recipe for a disaster.

We don’t want to scare anyone into not having a tailgate session, though. They are very fun and a great way to get fans and friends together to enjoy the big game in one place. When everyone is safe, they are going to have a lot more fun. Before you throw your next tailgate at the Vols game, check out these four safety tips to make it as safe as possible.

The Grill

The grill is the focal point of the tailgate. What good is a tailgate if there isn’t any food? If you are the chef of the day, your friends probably can’t wait to eat your world famous burgers. Don’t let this pressure you into getting them off the grill too fast. The last thing you want is your friends getting sick because they ate meat that was prepared incorrectly. Take a little extra time to focus to make sure you have made everything correctly. The short wait is well-worth everyone feeling great during the game instead of getting food poisoning.

Have Some Safety Measures on Hand

The last thing you want is a safety concern to arise during your tailgate, but you should be prepared in the event that it does. There are two things every tailgater must have on hand during their party; a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. Anytime you have fire or heat generated by gas or electricity you should have a fire extinguisher on hand. A first aid kit is also a great asset if one of your party going friends has an accident and needs minimal medical attention.

Have a Designated Driver

If you have been drinking, you shouldn’t be driving. It’s as simple as that. On top of being illegal, it’s incredibly unsafe and could even lead to you or someone else being killed. Ensure that one of your friends has been designated to drive in the event that everyone decides to drink that day. You will thank yourself later when you get home safely.

Don’t Get Burned

While tailgating, you are probably going to be outside in the sun for hours. Even though it might be cold out, you could get a sunburn. Make sure you have some sun tan lotion and plenty of water on hand to help you deal with the sun.

Following these four tips should get you on your way to having a successful and fun tailgate experience this football season. The key is to make sure that you are being as preventative as possible while also being fully prepared if something were to go wrong.
